Have you ever blown up a bridge?

(Not the physical structure — but a relationship with a friend, family member, or romantic partner?)

When we get wrapped up in the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say things we don’t mean and do things we regret. We find ourselves in an emotionally charged state, and we lash out at the people closest to us.

Why do we do this? How come it’s so easy to burn down the very relationships we claim to care so much about?

There are three main reasons that we can sabotage our relationships in this way:

1. We’re afraid of intimacy

2. We’ve been hurt in the past

3. We’re not getting our needs met

Let’s explore these reasons in a little more depth — and see why they can lead us to blow up our relationships.

1. We’re afraid of intimacy

Intimacy is an essential part of any relationship. It’s what allows us to feel close to another person and to truly open up to them.
