Three Tips For #MondayMotivation

I just got back from a weekend trip out of town, one of the first trips my wife and I have been able to take since our second son was born in the weeks prior to COVID-19 shutdowns.

The trip was incredible, refreshing, and relaxing. Best of all, there is something about getting some time away from work that leaves you thinking “Ok, now I’m ready to get back and crush it!”

Then the first morning back comes crashing into your world like a planet-killer asteroid. Rather than you crushing Monday, Monday crushes you.

We all have those days when we are struggling to get out of bed. Once you manage to pull yourself together, recapturing that motivation that you thought you would have can seem nearly impossible. You start the day with a sense of dread and it can start to feel as though nothing will quite go right.

What a way to start your week, right?

Here’s the good news: Finding motivation on a Monday is possible, and it just requires a couple of steps to hijack your busted brain and recapture your greatness.

Monday Motivation Tip #1: Make Your Bed

This might sound too simple, but making your bed is pure magic. There is something about making the bed that gives you a feeling of accomplishment, and checking off a to-do in the first 45 seconds of your day is awesome.

Have you ever come back to your hotel room after a day on vacation and noticed that your hotel staff made your bed? It rocks, right? Now imagine having that feeling every. single. day.

Monday Motivation Tip #2: Go For A Walk

As I’ve gotten older, I hope I’ve gotten wiser. Well, perhaps just older. Either way, like my geriatric neighbors, I have learned to enjoy the power of a good walk.

Want some instant creativity and a rush of motivation? Get outside and go for a walk! Breathe in some fresh air, and discover how it feels to come back refreshed!

That’s Monday motivation right there. There is nothing more addictive than a walk around the block.

Monday Motivation Tip #3: Create A List

My wife can tell you — I’m not an “organized person.” In fact, I didn’t even learn how to keep a calendar until I got engaged.

However, one of the best ways to build motivation and momentum each day is by creating a list of things you need to accomplish.

Here’s the key — don’t make it too long. The productivity experts will tell you that you should focus on the three top items you can handle each day. Accomplishing each of those each day will build an ongoing sense of motivation that will carry from Monday into Tuesday and beyond.

Here’s the productivity amateur tip: Make the first of your three priorities to make your bed. Boom, you are 33% of the way done with your day. (Look at you!)

BONUS! Monday Motivation Tip #4: Drink A Glass Of Water

This one is so easy that it’s a crime we never seem to accomplish it. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning!

You don’t have to be a nutritionist to know that hydration will help you feel refreshed and less sluggish. Plus, it keeps your skin glowing and looking great all week long. Or for those of us whose skin looks sluggish, drinking some water may be the first step toward actually surviving until next Monday.

Do you have a tip for how to get through Monday? Let me know — I need all the help I can get.
