These 4 Mistakes Will Tank Your Social Media Content Engagement
We all want to beat the algorithm and watch our social media content engagement go through the roof. However, you may be making major mistakes resulting in lower engagement levels.
Social media management has gone from a luxury to a necessity, yet many businesses are still managing their social media in-house.
This can work if you have someone on your team passionate about social media and has the time to dedicate to creating engaging content.
But more often than not, we see businesses making major mistakes that result in lower engagement levels, even if they don’t realize it.
You may think that building an online following is all about creating great content. And while that’s undoubtedly a part of it, there’s more to it than that.
If you’re making any of these four common social media mistakes, you could be tanking your engagement levels without even realizing it:
1. Posting Without a Purpose
The golden rule of social media is always to have a purpose for your post. Whether to educate, entertain, or inspire your audience, every piece of content you share should have a reason behind it.
If you’re just posting for the sake of posting, your audience will quickly catch on and lose interest. What’s worse, followers can easily see through posts that are just trying to sell them something. Don’t add to the noise unnecessarily.
Make sure every social media update has a purpose and is relevant to your audience. If you’re not sure what your purpose is, take a step back and reassess your goals for social media.
2. Not Posting Regularly Enough (Or Too Much)
Another common mistake businesses make is not posting regularly enough. If you go for long periods without posting, your audience will forget about you and move on to following someone else.
On the other hand, if you’re bombarding your followers with too many updates, they’ll quickly get overwhelmed and tune you out.
It’s essential to find a happy medium when it comes to posting frequency. The best way to figure out how often to post is to experiment and see what works best for your audience.
Start with a couple of times per week, and then increase or decrease your posting frequency as needed.
3. Not Engaging With Your Audience
Engagement is a two-way street. If you’re not interacting with your audience, they’re not going to want to interact with you.
Make it a point to reply to comments on your posts and engage in conversations with other users. The more you interact with your followers, the more likely they will stick around and continue following you.
Don’t just engage with negative responses. Proactively lead the way by responding to all comments and reaching out to other users, even if they don’t follow you.
4. Posting Boring, Unengaging Content
This one is a bit of a no-brainer. If your content is boring, your audience is not going to want to engage with it.
To avoid this, make sure you’re sharing relevant and interesting content with your target audience. Mix things up by posting a mix of text, images, videos, and infographics. (But never copy other content and use it as your own!)
And most importantly, don’t be afraid to experiment. The more you experiment with your content, the better you’ll get at creating engaging, share-worthy updates.
Build Social Engagement Strategically
It’s not enough to just post great content if you want people to engage with it. You also have to make sure that your posts are engaging, relevant, and timely.
If you can do that, you’re well on your way to increasing your social media engagement levels. Don’t forget to experiment with different types of content and find what works best for your audience.
And last but not least, make sure you’re engaging with your followers regularly. If you can do all of that, you’ll be well on your way to social media success.
