The World is Falling Apart — So Chase Those Dreams Now

If you are waiting for that perfect moment to throw caution to the wind, it’s here.

Last night I flipped on the news after my kids went to bed, mostly to check on whether or not it was going to rain this week (mowing, am I right?)

What hit me next was like something out of a dystopian novel:

  • “Inflation reaches forty-year high.”
  • “No-confidence vote to be held for UK leader.”
  • “Stocks tumble as oil prices skyrocket.”
  • “Baby formula nowhere to be found.”
  • “Monkeypox cases on the rise.”
  • “Russian invasion of Ukraine enters the 100th day.”

I sat there in numb disbelief, scrolling through my Facebook feed and seeing people my own age sharing the same stories with reactions of equal dismay.

This is our world now. This is the reality we’re living in. We can’t control it, but we can control how we respond.

I know it sounds dramatic, but it’s true. It can often feel like the world is falling apart, and if you’re not chasing your dreams, you’re just letting life pass you by.

Give Up on Giving Up

I’m not saying that you should quit your job and move to Bali tomorrow (although, if that’s what you’ve always dreamed of doing, I say go for it!). But what I am saying is that now, more than ever, it’s important to chase your dreams.

I’m not saying that it’s going to be easy. In fact, it’s probably going to be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. But it will be worth it, I promise.

The world is a scary place right now, and it’s only going to get scarier. But if you’re chasing your dreams, you’re living your life to the fullest, and you’re doing what you can to make the world a better place.

Once you find something that you’re passionate about puts you into a headspace that makes all the worries of the world disappear. And even if it’s just for a little while, that’s worth everything.

Stop Waiting for the Perfect Time

There’s never going to be a “perfect” time to chase your dreams. There will always be something holding you back — whether it’s money, time, or fear.

But the truth is, if you don’t chase your dreams now, you may never get the chance to. Life is constantly changing and evolving, and if you don’t change with it, you’ll be left behind.

One of my favorite Stoic philosophers, Seneca, said: “It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”

In other words, the things that seem impossible are usually only impossible because we’re too afraid to try. Imagine what you could achieve if you stopped letting fear hold you back!

Do That Thing You’ve Always Wanted to Do

So, what are you waiting for? If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, now is the time to do it. Stop making excuses and start chasing your dreams.

It could be something as simple as taking a cooking class or starting a blog. Or it could be something bigger, like quitting your job and starting your own business.

Leaving my career to pursue freelance writing was one of those things. My wife and I had put together a list of pros and cons and weighed the risks against the rewards. And in the end, we decided that the risk was worth it.

We took a chance, and it’s paid off — I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and I’m finally doing what I love. And that is what chasing your dreams is all about.

Is it hard? Of course. Do I fear that one day the clients will dry up and I’ll be left with nothing? Absolutely. But I’m chasing my dreams, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s About More Than You

Remember this when you’re chasing your dreams: it’s not just about you. It’s about making the world a better place.

When you’re living your best life and doing what you love, you inspire others to do the same. You show them that it’s possible to chase your dreams and make them a reality.

And that may just start a chain reaction of others chasing their own unique dreams.

And that is the most important thing of all. So, what are you waiting for? The world is waiting for you to chase your dreams. Are you ready to take the plunge?

The world is falling apart — go chase your dreams and see if you can play a role in putting it back together again.
