I moved into my freelance writing career from my previous role as a pastor. The years I worked in ministry were amazing yet incredibly challenging — and ultimately, not sustainable for me.

It was the writing that sparked my heart — and I was lucky to find avenues to begin monetizing that skill — and so I took the plunge into freelancing.

At first, it was really scary. I was used to a regular paycheck and benefits, and now I had to rely on my own networking and hustle to make things work.

But I quickly realized that one of the biggest advantages I had as a freelancer was my own willingness to be kind — something that had served me so well in my previous career.

Now, being kind is not only a core part of how I operate as a freelancer — it’s also one of the main reasons why I’m successful. Here’s how:

1. Kindness Is a Superpower in Networking

As a freelancer, networking is essential to your success.

You need to be constantly meeting new people and connecting with potential clients, editors, and collaborators.
