It’s our favorite of year again — time for overly ambitious New Year’s resolutions that put unnecessary pressure on ourselves!

As freelancers, we often already deal with tight deadlines, demanding clients, and the stress of running a small business.

So as 2024 approaches, let’s go easy on ourselves and avoid the temptation to take on more than we can handle.

While goals are important, if you find yourself making extreme resolutions like “I will never turn down work!” or “I will be an expert in everything!”, consider this your sign to chill out.

Rather than pushing yourself to unrealistic extremes, set meaningful resolutions that actually set you up for success — things like taking time off, raising rates to earn what you deserve, and saying no to clients that don’t align with your goals.

To help you avoid resolution regret, here are 7 overzealous freelance resolutions you SHOULDN’T make for 2024:

“I Will Take on Every Client that Comes My Way”

It’s tempting to say yes to every business opportunity when you’re eager to grow. But taking on too many clients at once is a one-way ticket to Burnoutville.

Before long, you’ll end up missing deadlines, delivering subpar work, and potentially damaging your reputation.

Be selective about who you work with so you can devote proper time and energy to each project.

“I Will Master Every Online Skill There Is”

While versatility is great, declaring you’ll become a jack-of-all-trades overnight is unrealistic. Building expertise takes time.

Rather than expecting to magically transform into a marketing, design, writing, and coding wizard, focus on enhancing your strengths while outsourcing your weaknesses.
