One of the first things you’ll discover as a freelancer is that engaging with clients can be intimidating and overwhelming.

From making sure your communication is professional to staying on top of deadlines, there are plenty of challenges to overcome.

Yet, being a fantastic freelancer starts with knowing how to navigate the ins and outs of client relationships. They’re paying the bills, so you better know how to create lasting relationships that work for both parties!

Over the past few years, I’ve learned that client connection is more about soft skills than hard ones. Most of the time, if you can set up some simple processes and expectations on the front end, the rest is gravy.

The first step to successful client engagement is establishing processes for communication.

Every project should have an agreed-upon timeline, a set of expectations and standards, and a regular schedule for checking in or talking about progress.

You want to make sure that you communicate with your client regularly and that you’re available when they need to reach out.
