Learning how to balance work and life as a freelancer is an art form.

Over the past few years, I’ve watched my freelance writing turn from a hobby-hustle into a full-time gig.

Between wrangling clients and completing projects, I’ve found my daily schedule looking more like a circus act than my ideal nine-to-five.

But if there’s anything I’ve learned about this lifestyle, the key to success is maintaining a balance between work and life.

Here are five tips I use to keep my juggling act in check:

1. Set Boundaries

First things first — you need to learn how to say NO.

When clients come knocking on your door with an offer that isn’t quite what you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to turn it down (or at least politely negotiate the terms until they meet your expectations).

Knowing how to set healthy boundaries is integral to a healthy life. If you can’t set good boundaries, you won’t be able to focus on the essential things in life.

2. Create a Schedule and Stick To It

Sticking to a schedule is one of the most effective ways to balance work and life.
