Our unprecedented times aren’t all that new — if we look back at our forbearers.

I flipped on the news last night to catch the weather, hoping the 100+ degree days were finally over.

Before the weatherman could get in a word about the humidity, I was bombarded with stories of violence, death, and destruction.

Wars there, plagues here, political strife… on and on it went.

I turned off the television, feeling angry, frustrated, and helpless. All I wanted was a little relief from the heat — but instead, I got a reality check that things in the world are far from perfect.

It’s easy to get caught up in the negative and feel like there’s nothing we can do to make a difference.

But if we step back and look at the big picture, we’ll see that people have always been fighting for peace, justice, and equality amid crazy circumstances.

And many of these people were Stoics. If we take the time to get to know them, we might just discover that our “unprecedented times” aren’t really all that unprecedented after all.
