If you’ve read any of my past blogs here on Medium, you know that I love studying the stoic philosophers of ancient Greece. Beyond their ageless wisdom about living life, they knew a thing or two about navigating a world that can often be overwhelming.

One of the things they preach is to stay grounded — meaning in touch with reality and not to let yourself get carried away by your emotions.

Stoic emperor Marcus Aurelius is famed for saying, “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.”

Now put that statement in the context of his being a king in one of the most powerful empires in human history.

He was surrounded by luxury and every reason to want more. Plus, he faced wars, internal coups, and deadly plagues.

But no matter how prominent he was, Marcus knew his inner peace relied on his ability to stay grounded.

So I’ve been trying to take that same approach these days, even though my life is much simpler than a Roman emperor’s. I know it’s essential to stay humble and recognize my own mortality to truly appreciate what I have and my life.
